The Houston County News website has a poll this week regarding the county board and banning frac sand mining in the county.....might want to get some people voting as right now most of the votes are for "no" do not ban.  Poll is located in the ads on the center to bottom on the right side of the screen.

Hi frack-sand mining fighters,

Please read, act, and share with others. This directly affects us!

The U.S. Senate  will vote on a bill (S.2083) that would greatly speed up U.S. exports of natural gas abroad. This would mean much more fracking, and thus much more frack sand mining in our region -- so please call your Senators with this message:

"As a constituent, I want Senator ____ to oppose S. 2083 and all efforts to export gas abroad. We should put U.S. communities over oil and gas profits."

The oil and gas industry and some in Congress are using escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia to push President Obama to dramatically expedite the approval of U.S. exports of natural gas. But exporting gas abroad means:

• More fracking in the U.S., putting our drinking water, air, climate and health further at risk, and thus
• Resulting in more frack sand mining in our region
• Higher gas prices here at home, reversing industry claims that fracking creates energy independence
• Bigger oil and gas industry profits as they sell gas abroad - most likely Asia, not the Ukraine.

Instead, Congress must work NOW to transition the U.S. off fossil fuels through proven clean-energy solutions.

I wanted to give those of you I know are most interested and engaged an outline of what is being planned for the delivery of the frac sand petitions to Governor Dayton on Earth Day, April 22. 

 

The bus is back! We have a 57 passenger bus scheduled on a route of Houston, Winona, Wabasha, Redwing, and St. Paul.  We will have press conferences in Winona, Redwing and St. Paul.  The bus route and times are below. If you want a seat, please, email me now and I will reserve you one.  We plan to fill the bus.

 

By the end of the week we will have the full details finalized and a much larger email out to everyone who has signed the petition and all LSP members. The good news is that as of today we have 4,475 signatures so we are on track to exceed the goal of 5.000 signatures by Earth Day.  I hope you can join us.  This is going to an exciting day.   

 

Bus schedule for April 22 delivery of frac sand petitions to Gov. Dayton:

·         7:15 a.m. leave Houston from Barista's Coffee House.

·         7:45 a.m. arrive in Winona at City Hall in Winona. Press conference at 8:00 a.m.  

·         9:00 a.m. arrive in Wabasha at City of Wabasha overflow parking lot across from Supervalu.

·         9:40 a.m. arrive in Red Wing. Press conference at 9:50 a.m.  

·         11:40 a.m. Arrive at the Capitol. Noon press conference and delivery of petitions to Governor Dayton’s office.

·         1:00 p.m.  Start return trip.

Please join in with Winona County CASM (Citizens Against Silica Mining) to Honor the Earth by participating in an Earth Day Rally to be held at Levee Park in Winona, MN on Saturday April 26 from 3-4:30.  See attachment for details.

Some of you may already be well versed on the subject matter presented at this rally.  However, we ask that every one of you make an earnest effort to attend and show solidarity on this important front.  The rally was deliberately scheduled to piggy back on the city’s Earth Day event in an effort to make it visible to the public and convenient to attend.  Because this is a family-oriented day for the city and because we want to look very approachable, we ask that you not bring signs or wear clothes with particularly graphic messages (even though some of the consequences of this industry are quite dire).  CASM will have a table among the Earth Day vendors at the north end of Main St. from 10-3 where stickers and buttons will be available.  Also, be sure to stop by the table to pick up a flyer for the Earth Day Rally which will list all of the speakers and offer resources for further information.  Hope to see many warm faces there!

Note the pictures captured from the mines in Chippewa Co., WI. There will be more. The posters I carry around are obsolete! These pictures were taken
in October, 2013, and capture the increasing size of mines as they continue to expand outward everyday as the sandstone is stripped from the earth, crushed, washed, sorted and trucked or trans-loaded out by rail by the tons. The removal of our hills, bluffs, and ridges in NW WI and the accompanying negatives make one take pause at the destructive industry and what it is doing to destroy the State of Wisconsin.

You will learn more about what is happening in other states that have hydraulic fracturing to contend with everyday.

ONLY 2 HAVE BEEN RECLAIMED IN THE PAST 18 YEARS. WHAT ABOUT FRAC SAND MINES LIKE THIS ONE ABOVE? HOW WILL IT BE SUCCESSFULLY BE RECLAIMED TO BE AGRICULTURALLY PRODUCTIVE?
